Day 4: Waterbury, VT to Jefferson, NH

Wow, it's hard to keep up with this, when we’ve been rolling in to campgrounds in the evening...
So, for day 4,‎ Lindsay and the kids were still back on North Hero, and getting a lift to pick up the van. Laura opted for a rest day too, so she hung around in Waterbury with a plan for Lindsay to meet her in Waterbury.
For a change, we decided to ‎go out for a big greasy breakfast. Maxi's was fantastic - exactly what we needed, and an easy (if bumpy) mostly downhill ride from Little River State Park to Waterbury.

‎The route shown below was very straightforward, sticking to highway 2 for almost the entire day. It was relatively quiet where close to interstates, and busier where it diverged, but generally fine. It was, however, pretty freakin' hilly, with around 1600m of climbing.

We passed through Montpelier and had a short stop outside the State Capitol.

We stopped for a snack at Rainbow Sweets in Marshfield, which turned into an early lunch ‎when we met the owner, Bill, and heard his pitch on all the treats (some savoury) that he had to offer. I texted Lindsay to suggest a stop there, although without coverage I didn't know if she'd get it before passing, but it turned out that they did stop there just by coincidence, without seeing my message. They were also enthusiastic about both the food and the theatre...

We had been muttering about finding a spot for swimming for a couple of hours, given the heat of the day, but were having trouble finding a good place. Lindsay, Laura, Rachel and Sean passed us and pulled over at what turned out to be ideal.

Approaching Lunenburg, VT, Derek and Steve F broke away from the group to chase a town sign before stopping to wait... out of sight in a shop. The rest of us sailed past oblivious, and carried on looking for them before stopping for our own snacks just across the state line. Eventually Derek and Steve rolled on and caught up to where we sat outside.

We got underway again and pushed through to the campground in Jefferson, scouting unsuccessfully for a restaurant option along the way. Bill at Rainbow Sweets had warned us that we were heading into an epicurean wasteland, and was being proven correct. Dinner ended up being takeout pizza brought back to the campground.

Fort Jefferson campground has an amusement park wit water slides attached, so the kids had been enjoy the afternoon ahead of our arrival. I hear they had "unlimited go-kart rides."

Our tent sites were at the distant extreme of the campground, and with our endless search for charging opportunities, several of us spent a lot of time hanging out around the laundry room.
